چکیده

The effect of acetosolv pulping variables viz. pulping time, temperature, catalyst (HCl) and acetic acid on oil palm frond fibres was investigated. The following conditions were found to be optimum to pulp frond fibres: 140 oC, 0.5% HCl, 75% acetic acid, and 1/10 solid/liquor ratio. Under these conditions we could obtain these properties: Kappa number 13-16, zero-span tensile breaking length – 83 km, sheet density – 0.57 g cm-3, tensile index – 48 N m g-1, tear index – 5.4 mN m2 g-1, brightness – 16% ISO and opacity – 98%. Higher values of these operating parameters would degrade the fibre characteristics such as zero-span tensile breaking length, tensile index, and sheet density.

Comparative Properties of Soda Pulps from Stalk, Bast, and Core of Malaysian Grown Kenaf

Soda pulping was performed using kenaf stalk, core, and bast as raw materials. It was observed that all these components could yield good paper characteristics when the resulting pulps were beaten to a freeness of 200 to 300 mL. Soda pulp made from the stalk was comparable to the frond from oil palm in sheet properties, but the latter would require higher beating energy to reach similar freenes...

Pulping of Empty Fruit Bunches (efb) from the Palm Oil Industry by Formic Acid

Empty fruit bunches (EFB) from palm oil were characterized. The holocellulose (66.97%), α-cellulose (47.91%), and lignin (24.45%) are similar to wood materials, and various non-wood materials, but the fiber length is shorter (0.53 mm). The influence of operational variables in the EFB pulping [formic acid (75-95%), hydrochloric acid (0.05-0.15%), and time (30-150 min)], on the yield, kappa numb...

Pulp and Paper from Oil Palm Fronds: Wavelet Neural Networks Modeling of Soda-ethanol Pulping

Wavelet neural networks (WNNs) were used to investigate the influence of operational variables in the soda-ethanol pulping of oil palm fronds (viz. NaOH concentration (10-30%), ethanol concentration (15-75%), cooking temperature (150-190 oC), and time (60-180 min)) on the resulting pulp and paper properties (viz. screened yield, kappa number, tensile index, and tear index). Performance assessme...

Study on organosolv pulping methods of oil palm biomass

Comparative study on organosolv pulping method have been done by using various mixtures of water and organic solvents as delignifying agents including ethylene glycol-water mixtures, ethanol-water mixtures and acetic acid-water mixtures to extract cellulose from agricultural crop biomass (Oil palm empty-fruit bunches-OPFB). The yield of organosolv pulping with ethylene glycol-water mixture, eth...

Influence of Operating Variables and Model to Minimize the Use of Anthraquinone in the Soda-Anthraquinone Pulping of Barley Straw

Soda-anthraquinone (soda-AQ) pulping of barley straw was used to obtain cellulosic pulps for papermaking purposes. The identified parameters, or variables to be optimized, were operating time, anthraquinone concentration, and PFI refiner revolutions, and the influence of these operating variables on pulp properties was studied. A polynomial model that reproduced the experimental results with er...
